Night bus from Nazca to Areguipa
It is supposed to be a 10 hours journey but in its typical fashion, the bus is always late. To make things worse for this trip, the bus broke down when we had 178 km to go before arriving at Arequipa. The bus is generally comfortable and it has an incline for sleep. No one expected it to breakdown and when it stopped unexpectedly in the early morning when people were still sleeping, those locals were most alert and asked the attendant who did not say a word to the passengers until asked and right away they all took off the bus and switched to another one that happened to be near by (the bus stopped at a toll station). Unfortunately, they only had limited seating on the other bus and by the time we knew something was wrong, the seats were all taken and we (and most tourists were left behind to wait for another bus which took an hour to arrive). The replacement bus was those 18 passenger van with much smaller seats. At least it was in working condition. At least 3 more hours to go. It is a good thing we were not catching a plane or joining a tour. The excitement, uncertainty and frustration of traveling. It is supposed to keep our brains alert and young. Our brains were definitely working overtime during those initially uncertain moments :) hoping for a safe arrival to Arequipa ...

This reminded me of traveling in China in the 80s.
ReplyDeleteThank goodness you made it finally !
Agreed. The communication and infra structure definitely need to improve. Arequipa a much bigger and busier than we expected (0.9 million population). It is quite hilly and the streets are very narrow, almost the same as in Sicily. I had no idea how cars go through those narrow streets. The altitude is getting higher at 2300 m and we already feel the difference in our digestion slowing down. The temp goes way down at night. Puno will be the highest altitude for our trip (30800 m) and I hope we be will adjust well to it and that we have enough warm clothes -'tempting to get thermo wear now 😉
