The Hiroshima National Peace Memorial Park was a sobering experience. It was a good reminder of the devastating destructive effects of war and the long lasting impact on the people. One can only hope that no one will experience the atomic bomb ever again.
We took the Shinkansen from Hiroshima to the Himeji station (in a hour), stored our luggage in the lockers at the station and walked to the UNESCO designated Homeji Castle. The castle was initially built in the 14th century. The structure has 6 floors and visitors were allow to visit inside provided shoes were off. The climb to the top floor was very narrow and steep. Quite a challenge for seniors.
It only took 30 minutes from Himeji to Kobe. After settled in the hotel (the most expensive one but without the awe effects), we went out to explore the city's night life. So far, we had been less than impressed. We had never seen streets littered with any garbage in Japan, except Kobe where cigarette butts were everywhere and garbage tossed casually on the interactions. Smoking is allowed in restaurants and making it difficult for us to eat in small authentic Japanese restaurants. What a shame!
