After a lovely breakfast, our
hotel front desk gave us some suggestions for our winery tour. We first visited Bodega Piatelli which has
one of the nicest setting in the region even though their wine is only ok
according to our expert. In the morning
before the heat set in and the wind picks up, the valley is beautiful.
We then drove to Finca las Nubes which is set
against a rocky hill overgrown with huge cacti.
The setting overlooking the valley below was so peaceful and
idyllic. We decided to join their winery
tour even it's all in Spanish. Their
late harvest white wine tasted so good that we bought two bottles for our evening
drink! Wine is incredibly inexpensive
here in Cafayate. One good bottle costs only just over 6 CDN! I don't think we
have ever drunk so much in our lives! Oh
well, one had to start somewhere…
Scenic road to our first Bodega |
This bodega is owned by some Americana who also operate another bodega in Mendoza |
Very fancy buildings in beautiful setting |
Scenic Calchaqui valley |
Bodega Piattelli - Locals highly recommend its beautiful setting though they rate the wine so-so |
Huge cacti |
Look at all that bottles of wine |
We visited another winery on the south end of Cafayate |
It is called Finca Los Nubes |
It comes with a nice view of the valley |
We joined a tour in Spanish though we only picked up 5% of what the guide said |
The guide taught us how to taste wines |
Our third and most pretentious bodega. A winery/golf/resort complex with front gate |
This is a huge operation, unlike the one we just visited |
Here in Cafeyate, you can buy good wines in huge 4.5L bottles!! |
Our last winery to visit just before they closed |
Bodega Nanni is known for their organic wines and is just a few blocks from our hotel |
This region has lots of this tree - its leaves used for mate and its fruits is like big squash |
